It’s one of the most talked about award shows of the year and for good reason. The Oscars is a glamorous night that could be best described as one giant party of Hollywood’s most fabulous stars. This year brought moments to remember as 12 Years A Slave won for Best Picture with Lupita Nyong’o as Best Supporting Actress and Ellen DeGeneres’s epic selfie got the most retweets since President Obama’s picture from his reelection in 2012. And of course, Jennifer Lawrence fell again. We’re thinking this might become an Oscar tradition.
When reflecting on the night’s events, we always remember the red carpet arrivals. We’ve put together a list of what we think were some of the best and worst dressed stars from the Oscars 2014.
1. Lupita Nyong’o
The newly acclaimed Oscar winner looked like a real-life Cinderella, but better. She was dressed in a pale blue gown by Prada with minimal accessories and jewels that sparkled with her complexion. We know we usually don’t pick favorites, but secretly, Lupita would be ours.
2. Portia de Rossi
Whereas wife Ellen DeGeneres commanded everyone’s attention on stage, Portia had all eyes on her on the red carpet. She complemented this neutral Naeem Khan dress with a pearl and gold cuff and simple studs. Our favorite part about this look is the high collared neckline and the mix of patterns in the lace overlay.
3. Jenna Dewan-Tatum
As if we weren’t jealous of her enough for being married to Channing Tatum, Jenna arrives at the Oscars in this sparkling gown by Reem Acra. We fell in love with every part from the full, ruffled skirt up to the jewel embellished mesh bodice. This piece is the perfect combination of texture and embellishment.
4. Jennifer Lawrence
J. Law is Lupita’s contender for the unofficial title of “Style Icon of Awards Shows” and definitely gives her some tough competition. As usual, the actress was dressed in Christian Dior — but this one was much more classic than recent styles. Like her dress from the Academy Awards in 2012, we’ve learned that J.Law always wows in simple looks, letting her natural beauty do the work for her.
1. Julia Roberts
We love you, Julia, but this look was not your best. Between the plunging neckline (with what looked like lapels?) and peplum, this black lace dress from Givenchy seemed a little messy. It probably would’ve looked better in a fitted cut: free of frills, gaping, and folding.
2. Anna Kendrick
While Anna looks beautiful in just about anything, this J. Mendel piece was too matronly for the young actress. Although her deep red manicure and clutch perfectly accented the embroidery on the dress’ midsection, we feel that she could have gone with something more eye-catching.
3. Idina Menzel
This deep emerald Vera Wang gown might flatter Idina’s feminine shape, but it is yet another “mother-of-the-bride” look that just doesn’t cut it in our book. The chunky silver jewelry and flat-ironed hair are also questionable.
4. Cristin Milioti
The Wolf of Wall Street actress fell a little short from standing out in this white Reem Acra gown. Actually, she really blended in with her outfit. We wish Cristin chose something more bold like the gorgeous dark lipstick she wore.
