We were recently invited over to Vera Wang’s posh yet low-key offices to check out her White By Vera Wang Collection, sold exclusively at David’s Bridal. I was in awe of the glamour, not only of the bridal gowns and the playful headpieces Wang has created to go with them, but also how the bridesmaids’ gowns were in bold shades and were in styles that could be easily reused for other formal occasions or even cocktail parties. The Fall 2013 Collection has a lot of surprises and all bridal gowns are priced between $728 and $1,328. There is a Gatsby influence coming through but some reworkings of the looks she is known for are also apparent, including the “ball gown” bridal dress that Wang single-handedly brought back to the bridal wear forefront 20 years ago, in addition to the pleated circle skirt.
The big news in the collection are the two new bridal colors that Wang is introducing—“sterling” which is a medium silver-grey shade and “oyster” which is cream mixed with light grey. Both colors are great alternatives for brides who don’t like straight on white but don’t favor off-white or ivory either. Both colors make a bold and sophisticated statement. Wang makes plenty of dramatic sashes to add a splash of color to any of her bridal gowns.
The new bridesmaid dress arrivals are sophisticated but youthful. There is a matte one-shoulder dress with asymmetrical pin tucking on the bodice that seems to be the favorite among fashion editors as well as a V-neck column dress with a matte crepe skirt and front slits. All the bridesmaids’ gowns come in 10 colors but the most refreshing (in my opinion anyway) was the deep purple that she officially calls “amethyst.” The new color being launched for bridesmaids is the aforementioned “sterling” so we might see some weddings this year where the bridesmaids are actually matching the bride! These chic bridesmaids dresses—some with cute retro peplums–come in at the impressive price points of $168 to $198.
