We’ve been awaiting the first Alexander Wang-helmed Balenciaga campaign since he was appointed creative director to the brand in December. Would it hearken back to the beachy backdrops of the brand’s fall/winter 2012 campaign shot by Steven Meisel? Or perhaps the grungy minimalism of Meisel’s spring 2012 ads?

A first glimpse at the 2013 fall campaign broke today, and the result is something that shares unarguably more DNA with Wang’s most recent ads than anything we’ve seen from Balenciaga before. The striking image was lensed by Steven Klein, who Wang used for his dystopian spring look. Kristen McMenamy appears in the cinematic shot, sporting a structured black suit that’s both classic and avant-garde. Per WWD, the focus was on craft, quality and technique, no doubt a nod to the brand’s weighty heritage. Wang told the publication that “[McMenamy and Klein] were the perfect team to illustrate this idea.”

The stunningly enigmatic first image what it is, we’re inclined to agree. You can expect to see Balenciaga’s spring campaign in June glossies.
