Let’s go back to the year 1999 when everyone had Y2K fever along with an undying love for boy bands and female pop stars. Among the top of the charts was Miss Britney Spears, who had a number one hit with “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, and was traveling worldwide on a tour of the same name. Along with her rise to fame, Britney held the image of a young innocent girl who started at the Mickey Mouse Club, sang about love, and had a fanbase of tween girls.
For her cover issue of Rolling Stone Britney decided to come out of her pre-molded shell and show the world a sexy and more mature side of herself. Now Britney was known by more than just her young girl fan base, all in thanks to polka dot boy shorts and a Teletubby plushie. It would be the first of many times that Britney would shock the world from dancing with snakes to kissing Madonna. Britney has perfected being scandalous while still remaining an American sweetheart.
Shot by famed photographer David LaChapelle, the images are pretty tame by today’s standard. The photos show Britney dancing, hanging out with fans and standing in a room all while being seductively dressed. It was a way for Britney to be herself and show the world the side she wanted them to see. LaChapelle summed up the ideas perfectly stating,
“She got it. She knew it would get people talking and excited.”
