If you fell asleep at 9 PM last night like I did, then you woke up today to a frenzy of Facebook statuses that say people are either team white and gold or team blue and black. What everyone is referring to is #TheDress.

Let us explain. An image of a dress posted by a 21-year-old girl named Caitlin McNeill surfaced on Tumblr. The photo was captioned: “Is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the fuck out.”

Thousands and thousands of people have seen this photo, and it seems like many people (like Kim Kardashian) see white and gold. However, there are just as many folks that see blue and black (like Kanye West). So what the hellll is going on?

Well, the dress is actually blue and black (even though I personally see white and gold). Bevil Conway, a neuroscientist who studies color and vision at Wellesly College told the Wired: “What’s happening here is your visual system is looking at this thing, and you’re trying to discount the chromatic bias of the daylight axis. So people either discount the blue side, in which case they end up seeing white and gold, or discount the gold side, in which case they end up with blue and black.”

FREAKY.

You can buy the dress if you want from ROMAN, which clearly does not sell a white and gold version, just a blue and black one.

Everyone on the interwebs are going crazy over this (like Taylor Swift), and even though we know the dress is really black and blue, team #whiteandgold is still going strong.

What color do you think the dress is?
