Last month, Rihanna donned a shockingly modest outfit and traditional Islamic hijab head covering to pose for photographs in front of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. She was quickly kicked out when representatives of the holy site dubbed her photoshoot too racy and disrespectful of the mosque’s sanctity. Apparently RiRi decided that if she couldn’t be sacrilegious while being fully covered up, she was going to be sacrilegious while wearing almost nothing at all — the Barbados-born singer wore a giant cross, goth-inspired makeup and about as little clothing as she possibly could for the Winter 2013/2014 issue of 032c.

Dark cosmetics, cigarettes, and black and white (and orange) outfits seem to be the order of the day for this shoot, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. The cover of the German-published biannual magazine features a grayscale photo of Rihanna in nothing but a Gucci jacket and a wide array of metal jewelry. Her edgy hairstyle — short and choppy in front with extensions in the back — follows her throughout all her looks.

Without a doubt, our favorite style from this shoot is this off-the-shoulder black mermaid dress. The sultry, sophisticated gown is distinctly different from the rest of the singer’s outfits, yet the fishnet gloves and heavy chain necklace maintain the gothic theme. The polka-dotted bandanna perfectly compliments the polka dot detail at the bottom of the dress. The only element that seems out of place is the thick white belt, which, in our opinion, still looks great on her anyway.

Other looks we loved include RiRi’s torn-to-shreds Clash t-shirt with leather jacket, checkered wool jacket with spider ring and smeared lipstick (side note: did she miss the memo that Halloween is over?), and bright orange jacket with leather and chain collar.
