Selena Gomez is no stranger to magazine cover shoots, but her trip across the pond to pose for i-D Magazine took a lot of people by surprise. The young star — who is slowly but surely breaking free of her Disney roots — is perhaps best known for her catchy pop singles or her relationship with recent bad boy Justin Bieber, but if she keeps on taking opportunities like this one, that’s sure to change.

Gomez found stardom in front of a million adolescents as she took the screen in Disney Channel’s goofy show, The Wizards of Waverly Place (of course, that’s not counting her days as one of the kids on Barney). And then she was shoved even further into the spotlight thanks to Bieber and  his collection of overly excited — and perhaps deranged — set of Beliebers. The ups and downs of the relationship were frequently featured front-and-center on the tabloids. Apparently the whole world was deeply invested in the romance of two under-20s.

(They’re broken up, by the way.)

It’s pretty clear that Gomez should probably be taken more seriously than she is. Sure, she started on Disney Channel, which can either propel a young talent into stardom — take the Jonas Brothers, for example — or leave them struggling to swim through celebrity-infested waters (someone like, say, Ashley Tisdale). But we’re not convinced that Gomez should be placed in either of these categories (though, if we had to choose, it would be the former). After her breakup with the infamous — yes, we mean infamous, not famous — Biebs, Gomez seemed to grow disenchanted with her public image and sought to build herself a new one. Hey, we’re not going to argue. Just take a look at this photoshoot, and we’re sure you’ll agree.

The magazine hasn’t released very many photos — just the cover shot and one or two from inside the pages — but photographer Scott Trindle has successfully created an image for young Selena Gomez that is both Disney- and Bieber-free.
