What a year Selena Gomez has had. From headlining a world tour, to a starring in 2 films, not only did Gomez prove that she’s the ultimate trifecta (she dances, sings, and acts), she also demonstrates that she’s a force to be reckoned with. 2014 marks a very special year for Seventeen Magazine, it is now 70 years! So in honor of this anniversary, Seventeen is celebrating with it’s first ever March 2014 Power Issue. Within this month’s issue, the 21-year-old gives answers to questions that we’re all dying to know relating to how she’s overcome obstacles and how they’ve made her stronger than she’s ever felt before.
It’s hard to tell is Sel is back together with her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, but based on this interview she’s made it clear that he’s not the one for her. According to Selena, she hasn’t found someone who can understand her lifestyle and not be threatened. She even admits in the interview that she “might scare some guys.” She reveals that she felt most powerful this year, breaking out of her Disney status and finding the right people to surround herself with, especially BFF’s Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato.
Here are some of the most shocking quotes from her interview:
On guys being threatened by her:
“I actually talked to Katy Perry about guys who are intimidated by strong girls. I haven’t found someone yet who could understand my lifestyle, support it, love me through it, and not be threatened by it. It’s hard. I do think I might scare some guys, because I’m like, ‘I want to change the world! I have dreams! What do you want to do?’ But I only know how to be me.”
On how 2013 was a big milestone:
“This year is when I really started feeling powerful. I had always been the underdog secretly. I was on Disney when it was Miley, the Jonas Brothers, and Demi. I questioned the way I looked, acted, sang, and wrote. Then I turned 20, went through a really bad breakup, and realized I needed to have ‘Come & Get It’ be amazing. I wanted it all to be me. I’m glad it’s taken me this long to get where I am because now I am ready for it.”
On surrounding herself with the right people:
“I noticed my friends were different, that we were all becoming supportive. I’d get so angry at a friend and tell another friend and she’d just say, ‘Why don’t you look at her side.’ And those things piss you off in the moment, but then you realize that that’s who you want to be surrounded by.”
