For their annual spring music issue, V tapped recent Grammy-winning teen Lorde and California sister trio HAIM for the covers and, in a few words, there’s a whole lot of fabulous hair going on. Photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and styled by the legendary Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele, the covers are minimalist and clean (as most of V‘s covers are) with an overall look that could be conveyed as a subtle nod to an era of music where teased-out manes and effortless, hippie-chic locks stole the spotlight on many occasions.

Despite her frame-filling ‘do, Lorde manages to look utterly mature and sophisticated in an all-black Chanel turtleneck ensemble, while the HAIM sisters don a similar look in Ralph Lauren. In an effort to draw the two covers together further, both Lorde and the HAIM sisters wear the same black David Yurman cuff bracelet. The makeup is natural-looking on the eyes and lips, but the cheekbones are contoured flawlessly and look even more dramatic under the black and white filter.

While the artists have all covered various magazines before (Clash, Billboard and Rolling Stone for Lorde; SPIN, NME and The Fader for HAIM), none of the previous shoots were as no-frills as V’s, perhaps suggesting that their talent speaks loud enough on its own—especially considering both artists were some of the most talked-about in 2013. Still, we can’t help but circle back to that hair (and a special bravo to hairstylists Shay Ashaul and Jamis Pecis for that). Even though HAIM’s silky tresses may traditionally be a bit easier to pull off for everyday than Lorde’s wild-woman curls, we’re still dying to try our hand at recreating both with a teasing comb in one hand and a shine serum in the other.

V88 hits newsstands February 27th.
