We’ve gone over unusual uses of cucumber and Vaseline, and now we’re focusing on something that we have plenty of: nail polish. Somehow, I have well over 50 bottles of nail polish strewn throughout my belongings even though I can’t really recall the last time I purchased a bottle. So, if you’re anything like me, you’ve got tons of extra nail polish lying around, and chances are most of it is too old to use to actually paint your nails. But don’t chuck them all in the trash just yet! Turns out there are a bunch of new and unusual nail polish uses that will help you reorganize your life and save you from having to waste all that nail polish. Scroll through this list for some of the best life hacks that involve reusing your nail polish, and start to get organized!

Oh, and if not all of your nail polishes have gone bad, feel free to use them to create some awesome nail art designs. Here are just a few ideas!

1. Stop A Run In Your Tights

Apply a dab of clear nail polish to each end of the run, and then let it dry. This will stop the run permanently from getting worse!

2. Sealing An Envelope

Everyone knows that licking envelopes to seal them tastes bad and is gross. So, simply dab some clear nail polish (or you could even do colored if you’re feeling it!) to each corner of each side of the envelope. This will completely seal the envelope, and you don’t have to deal with the gross taste!

3. Keep Shoe Laces From Unraveling

Prevent your shoe laces from unraveling and becoming a mess by painting the aglet (yes, there is a word for the plastic tip thing on the end of your shoe lace) with nail polish. Use clear or colored polish, whichever you’re feeling! This tip works to prevent laces from unraveling but also works on ones that have already begun to unravel: just apply the nail polish to the frayed end and let it dry!

4. Color Coding Objects

If you’re like me, you can’t remember which key belongs to which room/building/door/safe/who even knows. So, make life a little easier by using nail polish to color code them!

5. Cover Up Scuffs On Shoes

No need to fret if you scuff your shoes! Just take a nail polish shade that most closely resembles the color of your shoes and paint right over it. Just like nail polish on your fingers, this will chip, so this is more of a temporary fix!

6. Salvage Wobbly Buttons

If you notice a button is wobbly and on the verge of falling off, take clear nail polish and paint the fraying thread. This will stop it from unraveling any further — same logic as the shoe lace hack!

7.  Smooth Over Splinters

Noticing that your clothes are getting caught on your wooden hangers? Paint over the splinters with some clear nail polish to smooth it over. Use this hack on splinters you find anywhere else too!

8. Prevent Rust Stains In Your Shower

Sometimes the bottoms of cans like shaving cream can leave annoying rust marks in your shower. Prevent this by painting the bottom of the can with clear nail polish (and obviously letting it dry before you put it back in the shower!).

9. Save Your Costume Jewelry

Paint a thin coat of clear nail polish onto the backs of costume jewelry to prevent it from tarnishing & your skin from turning green!

What are some of your favorite nail polish uses?
