For the past few years, ELLE has created a special issue dedicated to the women of TV, a fairly young tradition that has since been widely appreciated by many for celebrating the small-screen stars who don’t always land the big covers. The magazine also chooses these women based on their wits and humor versus their beauty — though all of the women this year happen to be beautiful anyway.
The cover of ELLE‘s February 2014 issue is a first for Mindy Kaling of The Mindy Project, who had never previously landed the cover of a major fashion magazine. Her photo, unlike the others, is in black and white, and it is cropped further in, too. The magazine has since received a bit of backlash for choosing to do this with Kaling’s photos and not the others as critics claim ELLE likely only made that decision because Kaling is slightly curvier than the others — though we at Haute Talk think Kaling’s simple yet elegant photo steals the show anyway, and that’s all that matters.
The magazine also features covers with Allison Williams of Girls, whose tousled hair juxtaposes playfully with her structured, angled navy dress. The same can be said for Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler, who is looking fabulous in a low-cut pantsuit. New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel is captured with a bit more of a softer, sweeter side as she wears a more eclectic floral print dress. Check out the covers for yourself here.
