Last night the Met Gala kicked off the Costume Institute’s 2013 exhibition “Punk: Chaos to Couture.”

Despite our initial resistance, we were all eyes when it came to the red carpet arrivals and the various interpretations of the evenings thereupon. Efforts ranged from Miley Cyrus’ cartoonishly gelled tresses, to Ivanka Trump’s confused Hamptonite approximation of punk, to the genuinely stunning, like Gala co-chair Rooney Mara who sported tough-yet-romantic Givenchy. Anne Hathaway, now bleach blonde and wearing vintage Valentino, looked like she had escaped from a particularly festive episode of Dynasty. Both Fanning sisters wore Rodarte. Diane Kruger sported a pink dip-dyed ponytail, while Nicole Richie looked surprisingly stunning in a Topshop column dress, and a powdered white up-do. Sienna Miller paired her white floor-length Burberry gown with a spiked leather jacket. Despite her stunning cobalt Stella McCartney gown, Cameron Diaz looked–dare we say it?–pretty matronly.
