We’re sad to be the ones to break the news, but today the final nail in the coffin of anything ‘edgy’ or under the radar about Brooklyn was driven in—and hard (our regrets to The New York Times, who will continue to report on the “up-and-coming borough” for years to come). This year, MTV’s VMA awards are coming to the Barclays Center.

After many a year in Los Angeles, the Moonman ceremonies will make their way cross-country for the show’s 30th anniversary at the 18,200 seat Barclays Center.

Everyone’s favorite uncool dad/Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement: “From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay-Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the ‘spotlight’ on MTV. Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca – the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013’s biggest bands, like fun. and the Lumineers. Now, it is only fitting that the first time Brooklyn will ever host a major awards show, we are welcoming the most exciting and talked about spectacle in the music industry . . . I’m so thrilled that I’ll probably get ‘no sleep till Brooklyn’ hosts the VMAs!”

And then everyone went to sleep.
