W Magazine Spends 48 Hours with Actress Fan Bingbing

Unless you follow the Chinese entertainment industry, you probably don’t know who Fan Bingbing is. W Magazine reporter Lynn Hirschberg certainly didn’t when she first saw Fan at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. In an article she wrote on the actress, Hirschberg said she was quickly filled in by someone in the awestruck crowd: “Fan is the biggest star in China. Only Americans don’t know her name.”

Well, Americans, it’s time to learn Fan Bingbing’s name. In addition to starring in dozens of Chinese blockbusters and serving as the face of L’Oreal Paris, she’s appeared in Iron Man 3 and has the role of Blink in the next X-Men film lined up. But more importantly, Fan is a fashion phenomenon, as evidenced by the fantastic photos that accompanied Hirschberg’s feature in W.

Styled by Patrick Mackie and photographed by Ellen von Unwerth, Fan showed off three very different looks with one element in common: a pair of gorgeous dangling Chopard earrings. The first photo, a high contrast black and white image shot in a bathroom, features the actress balancing on the counter and coyly kissing the mirror. The intricate details of her Emilio Pucci dress and belt are a little hard to see, but you can’t miss her elegantly long legs and simple but sexy Manolo Blahnik sandals.

The second photo only features Fan from the shoulders up, but it’s easy to see her sense of style from her black fringed Giorgio Armani scarf. This particular photograph features “classic makeup,” done by Christopher Bu for L’Oreal Paris, to “appeal to a wider audience.”

The third and final picture is one of our favorites. Dressed entirely in Dior (with the exception of the earrings and Manolo Blahnik shoes), Fan looks every bit the part of major celebrity, confidently strutting towards the cameras while adjusting her sunglasses. The flowing cape and bustled skirt lend a bit of flair to this highly sophisticated outfit.
