Madonna Vanity Fair 1991- in silver gown-magazine cover

By 1991, Madonna was a household name, thanks to her endless hits like “Papa Don’t Preach” and “True Blue,” along with her scandalous television performances.  1991 was a busy year for the star who was wrapping up her Blonde Ambition World Tour and starring in the film Dick Tracy.

With a career that has spanned over thirty years – and still going strong! – Madonna remains an icon of fashion and sexuality. It is fitting that for her Vanity Fair shoot she embodied the iconic Marilyn Monroe in her most famous shoots.

Photographed by Steven Meisel, the relationship between the two comes out in each photo creating the perfect homage to Miss Monroe. The bulk of the shoot references Marilyn’s 1955 appearance in the circus at Madison Square Garden which involved her riding an elephant. Madonna also captures a bit of Miss Monroe’s famous last shoot, where she wore nothing but a pink fuzzy sweater and sheer sheet.  There are also some cute shots of Madge and Meisel as well.

In one shot, Madonna wears the same gown that she wore to the Oscars the year where she performed the Oscar-nominated song, “Sooner or Later”. Madonna was channeling the blonde icon, while becoming an icon in her own right.
