Believe it or not, we’re actually fans of Black Friday. Are we fans of the crowds, rudeness and general fear for our safety while shopping? No. But the whole day of finding sales gives us a bonding moment with our families and friends, plus it really gets us in the mood for the holiday season. Of course, there was a time when Black Friday actually happened at midnight the day after Thanksgiving. This is no longer the case… especially for Macy’s.
According to Fashionista, the retailer will open its doors country-wide at 6 P.M on Thanksgiving Day — so basically, if you choose to go, you can forget your stuffings and apple pie. This unprecedented hour is due to well, us. A spokeswoman for Macy’s said it is “in response to the significant, sustained customer interest in last year’s opening on Thanksgiving.” Last year, Macy’s opened at 8 P.M., which was pretty intense, so you can only imagine how this year is going to be.
As for the employees, not to worry. Macy’s has said the shifts will be filled voluntarily by employees and that many shifts have already be filled. “We also heard last year from many associates who appreciated the opportunity to work on Thanksgiving so they could have time off on Black Friday,” Macy’s spokeswoman Holly Thomas told the Star Tribune. “Additionally, associates who work an opening shift on Thanksgiving will be compensated with incentive pay.”
Now, we’ll patiently wait to see what other retailers will open that early. Last year, Target, Toys R Us, Walmart, Best Buy and Kohls all opened significantly early. ‘Tis the season!
