We all dream in Phillip Lim. While Fall runways are always drowning in black, Phillip Lim does not shy away from color while making it work. This season, his inspiration was bikers. There was no shortage of leather, denim, moto jackets, and an underlying feeling of “punk”. However, Lim has a unique talent in being able make anything more feminine and even “work appropriate”.
The above look was a prime example of that. Leather, straps, and thigh highs. Yet, the camel coat and conservative skirt length were perfect ways to keep the look modest.
Want to recreate this look? All you need to do is dissect the colors and find the corresponding pieces. We think of it as a treasure hunt.
The key to this look is to layer it on. Top your leather tank with a gray cotton sweater and toggle coat to keep warm. Finish the look with a vibrant pink skirt to break free from the neutral palette. Don’t be afraid to go bold with the neon. Now that the outfit is so busy up top, keep the bottom pretty simple so as to not draw attention away from it. Minimalist shoes are just what the doctor ordered.
Just because the original runway look includes thigh high sandal boots, does not mean you need to replicate it exactly. We think for everyday, the thigh highs are overkill and could be the difference between “inspired” and a call to the fashion police.
While the coat is bit more expensive and above our $100 limit, that’s only natural for a coat. The truth of the matter is that you will not be able to find a worthwhile coat for less than $100. Shell out some extra cash for something that will last you through the winter and maybe into next year. Luckily every other piece is less than $100 each… even the shoes! Compare that to Phillip Lim’s usual $300-800 price range for basics and you’ve got a steal!
To finish off the ensemble, take a hint from Phillip Lim’s runway beauty look. The dark lipstick takes this outfit right into Fall. Can you tell we can’t wait for summer to be over?
