The 31-year old actress strikes the cover wearing The Row’s ivory tank top paired with Celine chandelier earnings. Nyong’o’s skin is glowing as her eyes pop with pink eye shadow and her cheeks are rosey. In addition to landing the cover of this legendary issue, Nyong’o sat down for an interview as she discusses “The Lupita Effect” and how winning an Oscar changed her life.
Remember back in March when Ellen Degeneres hosted the Oscar’s and did that comical bit of passing around a donation “tip hat” to order a pizza? While this was a clever and hilarious way to break up the award show, this moment made a little history. As many celebrities eagerly dropped in some cash, Nyong’o decided to donate her tube of Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing lip balm. Prankster Ellen looked delighted and said: “Lupita’s lip balm! That’s worth something!” before pocketing it for herself.
From that moment on, the #LupitasLipBalm hashtag and the phrase of “The Lupita Effect”was born, and the media frenzy ensued. Not to mention, the lip balm flew off the shelves as everyone wanted a piece of those Oscar-winning lips. Although the humble actress had no idea the phenomenon this would start, Nyong’o comments on how she made it her mission to redefine success and beauty. “I’ve heard people talk about images in popular culture changing, and that makes me feel great, because it means that the little girl I was, once upon a time, has an image to instill in her that she is beautiful, that she is worthy—that she can… Until I saw people who looked like me, doing the things I wanted to, I wasn’t so sure it was a possibility. Seeing Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah in The Color Purple, it dawned on me: ‘Oh—I could be an actress!’ We plant the seed of possibility.”
In addition, Nyong’o shares with the magazine the emotions she felt when she accepted the Oscar for The Best Supporting Actress.”I don’t think I will ever be able to really articulate how bizarre it was to hear my name at the Academy Awards. I’d watched in my pajamas the year before! I felt numb—dazed and confused. There was so much going on! It was overwhelming. That’s the thing: You win an Oscar, and immediately people ask how you feel. So you don’t have time to actually feel anything because you have to generate a response. And then some of the feelings you have are so intimate and visceral, words don’t really do them justice.”
We couldn’t be happier that Glamour chose Lupita to be the face of their “Women of the Year” cover. After all, she truly deserves this honor of recognition after the year she has had. Head over to Glamour to read more, and be sure to pick up your copy of the issue on November 11th.
