So as many of you are aware, the Golden Globes happened last night, and we here at Haute Talk were big fans of the show, from the red carpet all the way to the awards ceremony (how great were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler? 2015, anyone?). But since we’re of the more fashion-minded, we’re going to focus on the former.
The looks last night were so much fun to go through, because people generally looked really great or really terrible — the latter isn’t “fun” necessarily, but I mean, it kind of is. There were also quite a few celebrities who were theoretically dressed nicely but then just missed the mark, for one reason or another, so in addition to our “Best” and “Worst” categories, we’ve added a “Missed the Mark” section (and a couple of “Honorable Mentions,” because why not?). Check out the ultimate Golden Globes red carpet guide of 2014 below!
1. Sofia Vergara
Sofia Vergara looks all kinds of amazing in Zac Posen. Vergara is curvy, but this black gown neither accentuates her curves in unflattering ways nor attempts to obviously cover up her natural self. It’s a little Ursula à la The Little Mermaid, but only in the best ways possible.
2. Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o can do no wrong. The 12 Years a Slave actress wears this Ralph Lauren dress like it’s nobody’s business. We’re usually not the biggest fans of red dresses on the red carpet (we know, but it can clash in really weird ways), but we don’t mind this one at all.
3. Leslie Mann
Dresses with crop tops that flare out like this can accentuate hips in unflattering ways, but the Dolce & Gabbana dress that Leslie Mann wore last night was stunning. We loved the delicate floral material in black, and we thought the silhouette was very classic. Good choice.
4. Michelle Dockery
This Oscar De La Renta dress certainly isn’t va-va-voom in your face, but it’s beautiful and it fits Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery like a glove. Understated gold Bulgari heels were a wise choice, too.
5. Cate Blanchett
This ethereal Armani Privé gown is absolutely stunning. It looks perfect on someone as fair-skinned and classically beautiful as Cate Blanchett, and the detail in the sleeves and neckline are to die for. The hooped sparkly earrings and simple bracelet really bring this look together. Well done.
1. Hayden Panettiere
Oh man, no, Hayden Panettiere. The top of the dress looks like something we left behind in the ’90s for a reason, the gold on the clutch doesn’t match anything else, and the slicked back hair in combination with the heavy eyeliner makes her look like a biker chick in a bad way. This one’s a no-go for us.
2. Heidi Klum
Well, this is the second time that the self-proclaimed fashionista has wound up on our “Worst” list. We think she was trying to go for “ethereal classy spring” with this Marchesa dress, but it’s more like “nightgown nightmare.” The necklace was an odd choice, as were the strappy shoes.
3. Lena Dunham
Clearly Lena Dunham thinks she looks really sexy, but she doesn’t look the way she thinks she does. The adorable hair, red lipstick and necklace were a step in the right direction, but then she chose this yellow number from Zac Posen that just looks slouchy — plus, are the boob cups too small? Or just too low? We can’t tell, but they aren’t working.
4. Zoe Saldana
So many things. So many things going wrong with this. We love Zoe Saldana, but this Prabal Gurung dress looks like it got in a fight with three other dresses. We see what she was trying to do with the pink theme, but the clutch and shoes are two very different pinks.
5. Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts looks like she threw on a gown after work. This Dolce & Gabbana dress is very, very confused, and so are we.
MISSED THE MARK
1. Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock looks beyond stunning — the hair and makeup are just perfect — but the Prabal Gurung dress? It just misses the mark for us. The colors are kind of fun, but they aren’t really Golden Globe appropriate. And unfortunately because of the fabric, you can see every bubbling stitch. Oh, well.
2. Aubrey Plaza
Okay, we are big Aubrey Plaza fans (mostly because of April Ludgate) but this Oscar De La Renta dress is just a little too prom-y for us. Girl looks amazing in purple, and we love how she tied the colors together with her shoes, but it’s just not quite there.
3. Lizzy Caplan
We actually think this Emilio Pucci dress is super cool-looking (love the classy black dress coupled with the Aztec-inspired designs in the sleeves and on the chest — very innovative and clever), but it’s not something to wear to a red carpet event like the Golden Globes.
4. Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon will forever be adorable (how cute was she fake-trying to get a selfie with Julia Louis-Dreyfus?), and while this silhouette makes her figure look absolutely stunning, the bright teal color is what does it for us. Someone probably told her to wear it because it brings out her amazing eyes, but this Calvin Klein dress is a little too adolescent.
5. Amy Adams
This classification might be a little controversial for some (and we’re sure Amy Adams will be on many “Best” lists) but the combination of maroon and red in this Valentino dress just misses the mark. Her hair? Amazing. Makeup? Flawless. Jewelry? Lovely — and we’re big fans of the long, thin necklace on a low neckline. Even the silhouette is fantastic, and her body looks amazing, but it’s something about the colors that just don’t do it for us.
Drew Barrymore’s Monique Lhullier dress looks so adorable on her that we aww’ed. No single other person could have possibly pulled it off last night.
Taylor Swift looked very cute in this Carolina Herrera dress. Black and pink is a little meh for us, but we loved how seamlessly this fit her body. It’s just spunky enough to fit her personality without being too overwhelming. We also thought this dress was a fantastic example of how to classically and beautifully accentuate a smaller chest.
Which looks stood out to you?
