Penélope Cruz is gracing the cover of Allure‘s January 2014 cover, and she looks fantastic. In the photo, her hand’s on her cheek, and she’s looking straight ahead with slightly parted lips and present eyes. Photographed by Mario Testino (and makeup by Charlotte Tilbury), the shoot has the 39-year-old Lancôme spokesmodel looking tan, freckled and sultry with smoldering eyes and a round cut diamond ring.

During the shoot, Cruz had some time to answer some interesting questions. Of breastfeeding, she says, “As you can see, we’re not going to talk about diet for this story. I’m supposed to get extra calories because breastfeeding you burn, like, an extra 500 a day. I was breastfeeding my son thirteen months, and I plan to do the same with my daughter. [Nursing] is addictive. It’s hard when the day comes when you have to stop.”

Cruz and her husband, actor Javier Bardem, are also parents to two children, Leonardo and Luna. “I always knew I wanted a family because of the way I grew up,” she says. “Family has always been the most important thing.” Motherhood is also the central theme of her new movie, Twice Born, a story of an infertile woman’s struggle to have a child, set against the brutality of the Bosnian war. “She talks in a way that is really shocking many times,” says Cruz of her role, “not very politically correct. Because she had that dream of becoming a mother and [it’s] not happening, she says she feels defective.”

Regarding childhood, she said, “In my house every Sunday, everybody was cleaning the house. There was always music, and everybody was dancing, sometimes naked, around the house. Not hippie, but very free.”

Cruz is very close to her two siblings, Mónica, 36, an actress and dancer, and her brother, Eduardo, 28, a singer, composer, and producer. Mónica collaborated with her sister on a line of lingerie called L’Agent by Agent Provocateur. Cruz directed a short promotional film for the line. Her brother did the music and her sister modeled lingerie. “I did the whole casting myself,” says Cruz. “Some of the girls are 20. Some of the girls are 50. I made sure that we had a couple of plus-size models. It’s like a celebration of all types of beauty.”
