If we told you to imagine someone with a trendy sense of style and someone wearing a hijab, would you be able to imagine them as the same person? An odd-seeming question is actually a tricky one for most people with dominating Western ideals who wouldn’t really think of the Islamic world as an innovator in the fashion world. FIT student Sobia Masood, who started the blog “Cloaked With Faith,” is aiming to put an end to that by acquainting the online world with her on-point fashion sense that always includes or features one of her hijabs.
We told you a few weeks ago about Araz Fazaeli, “The Tehran Times” fashion photographer and blogger who takes to the streets of Tehran, Iran, to capture fashion-forward Muslim women, whose ongoing work had gotten quite a bit of attention. Masood, however, tries out the various ways a woman could wear and style a hijab right here in the U.S., from her native New Jersey.
Reminding us that the hijab and fashion are not mutually exclusive, Masood, who also wears it “turban-style” (while still covering her neck), started wearing a hijab about six months ago. While she wanted to express herself within her religious faith, she also wanted to maintain her artistic expression as well. She saw no reason for these two worlds not to work together seeing as, as she says, there are no exact specifications about what kind of headpiece to wear in which color and in which way.
