“New Year, New You”…or at least that’s how the saying goes. Instead of making a never-ending list of resolutions that you may or may not keep, why not try and do a few small things to help you kick-start a happy and healthy new year? We’ve dug up a few of our favorite DIY beauty treatments that are perfect for a New Year, New You mini cleanse. Check out some of our favorites that will make you feel healthier, happier, and rejuvenated. Happy New Year!
The drastic weather changes that take place each year really take a toll on our bodies and most noticeably our faces. Whether it’s endless hours of sun exposure at the beach during the summer or the whipping New York City winter winds that we at Haute Talk know all too well, we’ve found a few things to do that can help keep your face looking fresh.
1. Green Tea Eye Refreshers
According to dermatologist Dr. Debra Jalimna, green tea bags are the perfect way to de-puff tired eyes! Buy the iced-tea version and mix yourself a batch to keep in the fridge. After soaking cotton rounds in the tea, lay them on your eyes. The caffeine helps shrink the appearance of the blood vessels, and the antioxidants help tone down the puffiness. We knew that green tea is a relatively healthy alternative for other caffeinated drinks, but who knew it had so many other uses?
2. Banana Facial Cream
Your body knows and shows when it’s stressed and tired. Skin takes on a red and blotchy appearance when you’re under stress, and at the start of a new year, we definitely want to be looking our best. Check out how to make a facial cream that has bananas, which contains vitamins A and E, and elastin, which leaves skin feeling soft.
1 Mashed banana
2 Tbsp cream
1.5 Tbsp honey
1.5 Tbsp flour
1 Tbsp water
Simply mix this into a mousse. Apply to the face; leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse.
3. Toothpaste Remedy
Whether it’s under the surface or completely noticeable, we equally hate those dreaded pimples. Of course, they always seem to make an appearance the week of a big interview or party. To combat these dreaded additions to your face, apply a dollop of toothpaste to the pimple and let it sit overnight. The clay and mint in the toothpaste act to shrink and dry up the pimple — much better alternative to popping or squeezing it, which may cause scars.
4. Cuticle Cream
We’re all guilty of biting our nails. Whenever we’re stressed or nervous, you can count on that being one of the bad habits that we sporadically redevelop. Seventeen featured an all-natural DIY cuticle cream that moisturizes, strengthens, and softens the skin around your nails so that your manicure lasts longer.
1 Tin to store cuticle cream
1.5 oz. beeswax
3 oz. carrier oil
1 Tbsp honey
Melt beeswax and carrier oil together in the microwave. After the wax mixture is melted, add the honey. Pour into the tin and let sit at room temperature until it hardens.
5. Hair Mask
From all the blow-drying, flat-ironing, curling, wanding, chlorine, salt water, and dyeing that our hair endures over the years, it is beyond crucial to take care of it. Make a hair mask from egg yolk, avocado, olive oil, conditioner, and mayo to restore your lovely locks. The egg yolk provides protein, avocado and olive oil nourish the strands, and the conditioner and mayo detangle.
1 Egg yolk
1 Tbsp mayonnaise
2 Tbsp olive oil
A small handful of conditioner
Mix all of the ingredients together, then apply the mixture to your hair for an hour. Simply wash it out for soft, shiny, and strong locks!
