There weren’t too many surprises on the red carpet of the 2013 American Music Awards yesterday, which is a nice change from the crazy antics that have happened in years past. We’ve put together some of our favorite looks from last night, as well as some of the looks that made us wonder how someone could actually miss the mark that badly. We can certainly give this red carpet credit for variety — stars went in anything from gowns to pantsuits to “barely-there” looks.

Best Dressed

1. Taylor Swift

After hearing Taylor Swift’s last album and seeing some of her borderline immature looks on the red carpet, all I could think about my relationship with the star was, “We are never, ever, ever, getting back together.” Yet, the starlet has changed my mind, big time. This look, a Julien Macdonald mini-dress, makes her look sophisticated and sexy. She isn’t going for overkill and has picked out the appropriate accessories (do those strappy heels come in my size?). Her natural-looking makeup with her edgy yet soft waves makes this entire ensemble a favorite. Taylor Swift also won “Artist of the Year,” “Favorite Female Country Artist” and “Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist” at the AMA’s. Congrats, T-Swift. You’re finally growing up.

2. Kendall and Kylie Jenner

Kendall and Kylie Jenner are growing up, whether we’re reading for that or not. These two are making names for themselves outside of their family’s fame, and they’re doing a good job at it. These two look flawless, sophisticated, and grown-up without looking like they’re trying too hard. Kendall wore a Keepsake top and skirt, Manolo Blahnik shoes, and a Dylanex necklace. Kylie wore a Maiyet top, Giambatista Valli pants, Barbara Bui shoes, and Bijules rings.

3. Nicole Richie

Sexy, understated, and classy. Achieving a balance between all three can be tricky, but Nicole Richie does it perfectly in this Emilio Pucci gown. All the awards to you, girl.

4. Ke$ha

Is that you, Ke$sha? The “Die Young” singer and America’s favorite party girl cleaned up beautifully, showing a killer leg à la Angelina Jolie and having a more toned-down look. This is totally working for her, and we hope to see more of this side of Ke$ha in the future.

Worst Dressed

1. Aubrey O’Day

There’s just a bit too much going on here. There’s a lot of leg and a lot of cleavage, leaving nearly nothing to the imagination, and not in a good way. Everything just seems to be all wrong with this look — the ankle-strapped heels are adorable, but not with that dress. The overdone eyelashes plus the mom-like ‘do (and crazy roots) take this look from bad to worse.

2. Lil Mama

The hair, the over-exaggerated dress, the hideous bejeweled belt holding it all together. Cute disappointing sighs. This is Lil Mama’s big comeback after filming VH1’s original movie about TLC, where she had a stellar performance. This dress falls short, though, and we were hoping for a more glamorous look.

3. Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum is usually a favorite on the red carpet but this was not. The sheer and fringe is unflattering, almost shortening her stature. A bit more leg would’ve helped this look, but probably not by much.

4. Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne looks washed-out in this color, and the nude heels definitely don’t help. There’s also too much going on, with the sparkles and the overwhelming amount of fabric drowning her even more.
