New York Fashion Week is just around the corner. For the week of September 5th through September 12th (and the newly announced runway schedule!), Manhattan will be full of models, designers, celebrities, and high fashion. It is the time of the year when designers can showcase their collections for Spring of 2014 and hope that all their hard work finally pays off. There will the familiar faces that everyone will be clamoring to see, and there will be the few newbies who will make their debut and try to make their mark in the fashion industry. These are the top ten designers, old and new, whose collections we are beyond excited to view.
1. Adam Selman
One of the most talked about names this season is Adam Selman. Best known for being Rihanna’s personal designer and co-designer of her fashion line River Island, Selman is stepping out on his own for the first time this week. There is not much word on what the collection entails – only that it is inspired by Selmon’s love of swimwear. There is no word yet on whether Rihanna will be attending, but it’s sure to be a celebrity hot spot. Selman’s runway show is set for September 5th, his longtime boyfriend and Rihanna’s personal stylist, Mel Ottenberg, will be helping out. This is a collection not to be missed.
Another new face that will be debuting at Fashion Week is 23-year-old Brett Johnson. Johnson comes from an impressive family. His father is B.E.T founder Robert L. Johnson and his mother Shelia was the first African American billionaire. Brett who has no background in design, knew at a very young age that this is what he wanted to do. His collection is men’s street wear. It is aimed at his generation that Brett likes to describe as “The Mark Zuckerberg era” men who don’t have to wear full suits everyday but still want to look well-dressed. The collection was made in Italy with fine leathers and fabrics, making his price range a little more expensive.
3. Haneefah M
You probably haven’t heard of the name Haneefah M. A New Jersey native and life long lover of fashion, Haneefah will be showing her first ever spring collection this year at NYFW. With decades of design work with DKNY and Nicole Miller, Haneefah is more than ready to show off her fun and bold designs. She started working on her own collection back in 2011, and will be showing it on the runway Sepetember 7th at the Hotel Pennsylvania.
Opening Ceremony is retail shop that has showrooms, private labels, and collaborations. Created by two friends from California, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, Opening Ceremony created a place where fashion, art and travel could become one. Named after the Olympic games, Opening Ceremony will host its first ever solo runway show this year at NYFW. Instead of being in a building or tent they decided to take it to a whole other level by using Pier 57 as their location. All week long the pier will be full of pop-up stores, food, and music. Opening Ceremony has done a show with actress Chole Sevigney, who has her own fashion line, but this is the first time they will be doing a solo show. Judging by the location, it is sure to be quite the spectacular show.
5. Lela Rose
Lela Rose has made her mark in the fashion industry. She may not be the biggest name at the show, but maybe she should be. Lla graduated from Parsons School Of Design and never looked back. Her style is described as feminine, sleek and whimsical. One of her greatest accomplishments is her wedding line, which she will be showing along with a ready-to-wear line called Resort. From what we saw from her Fall 2013 collection, Lela is an expert at straight lines and sophisticated patterns that every woman would love.
6) Ever since winning season 4 of the hit reality competition show Project Runway, Christian Siriano has sky rocket in the fashion industry. He has designed for red carpet events, celebrity causes, and has had multiple runway shows. The 25-year-old is known for making flowing, bold, and feminine pieces that resemble pieces of art. We are excited for his collection at the Spring 2014 Fashion Week after the release of some of his sketches. The sneak peak showed gorgeous flowing dresses and beautiful floral prints.
7. Hanako Maeda
Hanako Maeda is the mind behind ADEAM and made her debut at NYFW with her Fall 2013 collection. The Japaneses-born designer is back to showcase her Spring 2014 collection to try and top her last one. For her fall collection she went with the looks of woodland and landscapes. After her debut the likes of Alicia Keys, Shakira, and Lady Gaga wanted to wear her pieces. She designed with the idea of her two homes on mind, Tokyo and New York. It is no doubt that fresh-faced designer is going to be the next best thing. She will be showing her line on Tuesday September 10th.
Charlotte Ronson was pretty much born into fashion. Born to an artistic family in London and raised in New York City, Ronson combined her unique upbringing and different cultures to make a stylish collection. In 2002 she opened her own flagship store, Charlotte Ronson, in NYC. From then on her trendsetting fashions have captured the eye of young Hollywood. Celebrities from Kirsten Dunst to Blake Lively have all worn her clothing. Spring 2009 was her first showing at NYFW and she has been wowing fashion insiders ever since. Her past collections have been youthful, fun, flirty, and star studded. We have high expectations of her upcoming show.
Sass and Bide is an Australian fashion label named after its designers and creators Sara -Jane Clarke, and Heidi Middleton. The duo will be opening their first US flagship store in NYC that will join their others in New Zealand and Australia. The style of the brand is edgy and strong while still maintaining a high end feel. Their show this year is sure to be a fantastic with the help of stylist Vanessa Tarina and the music of John Gosling and Steve Mackey so there is no doubt that it is going to be a must-see show.
10. Betsey Johnson
Last but not least is veteran Betsey Johnson. A designer who shook the fashion industry is adored by celebrities and consumers a like. The New York-based designer adds an abstract and unique look to formal gowns.
